STACS is a Microsoft Windows Server network-based group student testing application for multiple choice tests created by teachers. The 20 question tests are created using the STACS Offline Test Creator application. The STACS Student Testing application is only suitable where a computer room is available with a Windows Server network connected to a class set of workstations. A student group sits the test using this network setup and the Sit Test application.
There are two full server versions of STACS; the STACS Server Multi Teacher Version for use by any number of teachers in a school and the STACS Server Single Teacher Version for use by individual teachers in schools that does not wish to purchase the Multi Teacher version of STACS. There is also a free Local Machine version that can be used to build teacher folders offline and to evaluate all the features of STACS and a free server Multi Teacher Evaluation version that can be used to evaluate STACS in a network environment in real time.
The STACS application is menu driven and extremely intuitive to use. Once tests have been created, these tests can easily be shared by teachers and/or forwarded to the application creator for inclusion for download in the STACS Community Free Tests section of this website. Once students sit a test, the test is automatically scored and the results stored in the relevant teacher folder on the server for each student. STACS also facilitates the export of results for offline viewing, printing, backup or distribution in a variety of configurations. Student and class results can be exported as .csv files for manipulation in Microsoft Excel or any other spread-sheet application.
The facility to add non-STACS test results for mid-term or end of term tests makes STACS an ideal way for teachers to manage multiple choice and other forms of student testing on an ongoing basis.
For security reasons, the teacher folder will always be deleted on exiting the system (except with the Local Machine version). In case of a power outage during testing, any existing teacher folder will be deleted from the server at startup. It is essential that users back up their teacher folder to a distribution medium (DVD, USB drive, SD card) on exiting the system and restore from backup at the start of a new session. For file and folder access reasons, STACS will not back up a teacher folder to the C:\ drive or restore a teacher folder from the C:\ drive.
As already stated, the teacher folder can be manipulated offline as required using the free STACS Local Machine application. It can later be restored from backup from within the STACS Main application. STACS can also be updated directly using the network workstation that is running the STACS main application. As an extra security feature, the multi teacher version of STACS checks to make sure that the name of the teacher folder corresponds to the username of the currently logged on user.
The features of STACS are outlined on the STACS Features page of this site.
Potential users are invited to download the free STACS Local Machine Version and to order the free fully featured time limited STACS Server Multi Teacher Evaluation version from the Order Evaluation Version item of the main menu. The STACS Server Multi Teacher Evaluation version will be fully functional for a period of 90 days from the date of installation. Any teacher folder created with either of these versions will be fully compatible with a Server Single or Server Multi Teacher Version purchased later provided that teacher and student log on names and passwords are correct.
NOTE: Due to continuous development, screenshots and menus on the website may differ slightly from those in the applications.
